KEYNOTE SPEAKER – CHRIS GARDNER

Hear the inspirational story of how Chris persevered to overcome tremendous obstacles; including homelessness and a childhood marked by poverty, domestic violence, alcoholism, sexual abuse and family illiteracy, to become the top earner at Bear Sterns & Co.

The amazing story of Gardner's life was published as an autobiography, The Pursuit of Happyness (Almstad/Harper Collins) in May 2006, and became a New York Times and Washington Post #1 best-seller. In paperback, the book spent over 20 weeks on the New York Times best-seller list and has been translated into 14 languages.

Chris was both the inspiration and associate producer for the movie The Pursuit of Happyness, released by Columbia Pictures in December 2006. Starring as Gardner, Will Smith received Academy Award, Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild nominations in this #2 all-time domestic grossing drama.

BRIDGE BUILDER AWARD RECIPIENT – MIKE RAWLINGS

In 2005, Mike Rawlings answered the call of Mayor Tom Leppert to become the City of Dallas Homeless Czar and Board Chair of the Metro Dallas Homeless Alliance. Over the past 5 years Mike has put his heart and soul into ending homelessness in Dallas. Under Mike’s leadership the City of Dallas has embarked on an innovative model and strategic plan that is committed to best practices, accountability and compassion. He has built a strong and effective community-wide coalition comprised of health care and social service providers, government at all levels, and the private sector.

As a community change-agent, Mike has been the catalyst for many positive results;

  • Dallas’ chronic homelessness is down by 57%
  • Through public and private funding Dallas completed The Bridge, a new assistance center in 2008
  • The Bridge serves over 1200 guests per day
  • There was a 16% reduction in crime in The Bridge’s neighborhood during the first year of operation and an additional 13% reduction in crime during The Bridge’s second year
  • Nearly 1500 former homeless individuals found jobs
  • Over 775 former homeless individuals in Dallas have found permanent housing
  • A strategic partnership was formed with the Dallas Housing Authority
  • Advocacy to help the homeless has strengthened within the federal, state, county, and local leadership levels
  • The US Conference of Mayors recognized Dallas with a 2009 City Livability Award for the innovative approach to ending homelessness and the success of The Bridge
